The Market has different meanings in different contexts. The organized chaos of the trading floors may now be a bygone era but they're still a good representation of the market: people and emotion.
And yes, of course these days computers play a big role but their effect is mainly increased speed and amplification of that emotion.
How can we take advantage of the market for our own benefit?
People... we all make the market (along with some algos). And there’s a lot we can learn from those who have walked the path before us. We seek out the legends, the unknown greats and anyone with a story to tell to bring their wisdom to you through a series of conversations. Join us.
Also known as Market Type or Market Regime. Market conditions are like weather conditions. We can’t control the weather and as individual traders we typically don’t have any control over the market condition.
But if we want to engage with the market its best to know if its a sunny summer afternoon or if we’re walking into a storm. Once we’re aware of the conditions we’ll have a much better idea of how to prepare (our Self) and how to engage (which Systems to use).
The Market's made up of people... lots of people. But there's a handful of industry legends who share their successes, mistakes and wisdom with Jeff Boccaccio in this series of conversations. Join us!
Like weather conditions, market conditions are difficult to accurately forecast... especially the further into the future we go. But we can get a good read of the current conditions by looking out the window and looking at the recent history.
There are various methods but the approaches developed by Dr Van Tharp and Dr Ken Long keep it simple by breaking market conditions down into two components:
Direction: Bull, Bear or Sideways
Volatility: Quiet, Normal or Volatile
Van and the team at the Van Tharp Institute used to publish a Market Condition report monthly to newsletter subscribers. We've developed our own tools and ahead of the closing of VTI at the end of 2023 we reached to see if they'd be happy for us to continue the tradition by making our own version of the report available free of charge to our own newsletter subscribers. They loved the idea which would give subscribers a mechanism for tracking conditions across various world markets using Van’s Market SQN calculation.
If this sounds useful to you drop your details into the form below (even if you're already on the list) and we'll add you to the monthly report once its available.
